The World Bank Group in Tajikistan celebrated 16 days of activism against gender-based violence among its projects and awarded gender champions. During the event, projects reflected on collective achievements, discussed lessons learned, and recognized efforts being made to promote gender equality and increase practices that contribute to women’s economic empowerment.
The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project was awarded as one of the best Projects working to improve the lives of women by improving the water supply and sanitation conditions of rural women among all World Bank Projects.
Before the start of the Project and until the provision of drinking water, the population of the Vose region suffered from an acute shortage of drinking water. According to studies, 80% of women, young girls and children carry drinking water at the request of households. Young girls and children bear the heavy burden of carrying water during their physical development. It took more than 30 minutes, or even more time, to bring drinking water from the source to the door of the house, and all this suffering fell on the heads of girls and women. After provision of drinking water to the rural population of the Vose region, women’s work has become significantly easier.
The role, participation of women and gender equality are also at the forefront of the Project. Because in the family, responsibility for ensuring the safety of water, its economical use, caring for the household and similar tasks lies with the woman. That is why most of the Project’s outreach activities are carried out with women and involve a large number of young women.
From the beginning of the Project implementation to the present day in the Vose region:
76 000 women were provided with clean drinking water;
43 500 students of general education institutions received access to drinking water;
1360 girls aged 12 to 17 years were trained as part of the Project
All our efforts are aimed at improving the living standards and conditions of water supply and sanitation for rural women!!!
